From an acoustic set recorded in August 1971 at Newcastle Mayfair Ballroom with Mott the Hoople. Another fantastic band, but they didn't achieve real success until the following year when they released the David Bowie song All The Young Dudes. It was to be their biggest hit record and launched them into super stardom. This came just in time because the guys were very close to splitting up when we met them.
We like to think they may have taken some encouragement from our song lyrics "Everyone's a star - everybody's somebody's guiding light, no matter who you are". But then again, maybe not.
Now you know that losers can never win
You don't want to walk that road again
Standing on the outside
Looking in
Up against the bar
Never doing right, always going wrong
Waited for the light but it never shone
Always had to fight just to get along
But didn't get too far
Everyone's a star
Everyone's a star
Everybody's somebody's guiding light
No matter who you are
Feeling all alone when you're in a crowd
Talking to yourself as you think aloud
Want to do some good
Just to make them proud
So you try to win their war
Flying in a straight line, looking back
Trying to get the best out of what you lack
Dying to put your real life back on track
And still you bear the scar
Everyone's a star
Everyone's a star
Everybody's somebody's guiding light
No matter who you are
Will you ever find what you're looking for?
You can't keep your mind on it anymore
If you weren't so blind
Then you'd know for sure
But life is so bizarre
Thinking being nobody is a crime
Gonna be a somebody down the line
Yeah, you'll be a big shot when it's time
So tell them au revoir
